Dynamics of microbial communities on the corrosion behavior of steel in freshwater environment

Abstract In a freshwater environment, accelerated corrosion of carbon and stainless steels is frequently observed. Here, an immersion study was conducted using nine types in pool for 22 mo. Accelerated observed Cr-containing cast iron, whereas no visible steels, even after Microbial community analysis showed that, general corrosion, Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria were enriched the early phase, Fe(III)-reducing increased corrosion-developing sulfate-reducing products during final phase. contrast, 9% Cr steel with localized family Beggiatocaea particularly enriched. These microbial compositions also differed from those water sediment samples. Therefore, communities are drastically altered progression iron-dependent energy metabolism contributes to environment that enables enrichment other microorganisms.
